Help protect native wildflowers and restore woodland health by volunteering for a garlic mustard pull at Heritage Sanctuary, located just north of Heritage Heights Park. This hands-on conservation effort focuses on removing garlic mustard, an aggressive invasive plant that threatens spring wildflowers, including trilliums. Volunteers will work off-trail alongside Madison Parks staff, contributing to meaningful habitat restoration while enjoying a spring morning outdoors.
Responsibilities
- Hand pull garlic mustard plants, including roots, to prevent regrowth
- Carry and pile or bag removed plants as directed by staff
- Walk off-trail through uneven woodland terrain
- Follow guidance from staff to identify target species and protect native plants
Qualifications
- Comfortable walking on uneven ground and off established trails
- Able to bend, kneel, and perform light to moderate physical activity
- Willing to learn and follow plant identification guidance
- Positive attitude and interest in conservation work
Additional Notes
- No prior experience needed, training will be provided on-site
- Dress for the weather and wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes
- Long sleeves and pants are recommended for protection
- Gloves are recommended if you have them
