Sell Merchandise: Handle cash and make change while selling Ride the Drive merchandise such as t-shirts, tote bags, water bottles, and other event items. Answer Questions: Provide participants with basic information about the event route, schedule, and activities. Communication: Use the supplied walkie-talkie to stay in communication with Madison Parks staff throughout the shift. Afternoon Shift Duties: At approximately 2:30 pm, help inform participants that streets will reopen to traffic at 3:00 pm. End of Shift: Return the merchandise money bag and remaining items to Madison Parks staff. Safety: Encourage participants to respect private property and follow traffic rules. Follow emergency procedures if needed.

Join us for a monthly Volunteer Workday at Elver Park and help care for one of Madison’s largest and most beloved parks. These family friendly work days are designed to welcome volunteers of all ages and abilities. Depending on the season, projects may include removing litter, cutting invasive species, collecting native seeds, or assisting with other land stewardship efforts. Each month offers a hands-on opportunity to support the long-term term health and beauty of this important community park.

Whether you are passionate about conservation, looking for a meaningful activity with your kids, or simply want to spend time outdoors giving back, this is a great way to make a visible difference together.

Responsibilities
• Remove litter from trails, open spaces, and high use areas as needed
• Cut and remove invasive plant species
• Assist with native seed collection during appropriate seasons
• Support seasonal land stewardship projects
• Work collaboratively with other volunteers and families

• No experience needed
• Family friendly and welcoming to all ages
• Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Ability to walk on uneven terrain and perform light to moderate physical activity
• Youth under 16 accompanied by an adult

• Meet at the volunteer supply table by the path between the parking lot and the playground. Look for the Parks volunteer table and staff setup.

Join Friends of Ridgewood Trails for a hands-on conservation event focused on repairing gully and rill erosion along the trail system. This effort supports the group’s mission to preserve the natural beauty of Ridgewood Trails and protect its fragile soil structure.

Friends of Ridgewood Trails (FORT)

Volunteers will help move and spread material in targeted erosion areas under the guidance of event leaders. This is a great opportunity to learn about trail stewardship and soil conservation while directly improving the park.

Future events will focus on erosion prevention through native plantings and careful trail maintenance practices

Responsibilities

• Participate in a bucket brigade from the top of the hill
• Help transport material from Capitol View Prairie via the Sigma Octanes trail
• Use rakes to assist with spreading and stabilizing material
• Follow guidance from event leaders to designated drop sites

Help Madison Parks turn paper records into usable data! Volunteers will assist with entering information from Management Unit Scorecards into a provided spreadsheet template. This behind-the-scenes work supports long-term planning, reporting, and park management decisions. Scorecards can be provided as paper copies or scanned PDFs, and data entry can largely be completed remotely after orientation.

Responsibilities
Enter data from Management Unit Scorecards into a provided spreadsheet template
Ensure information is entered accurately and completely
Communicate with staff if questions or inconsistencies arise
Return completed spreadsheet files to staff by the agreed-upon deadline

Qualifications
Comfortable with basic data entry and spreadsheets (Excel or similar)
Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Able to work independently after initial guidance
Reliable and able to meet agreed-upon timelines

Additional Notes
Estimated total time commitment across all volunteers is approximately 40–100 hours
Data entry is ideally completed by June
Scorecards may be provided in paper or electronic (scanned) format
This opportunity is well-suited for individuals who enjoy focused, independent work

Training

Help keep Monona Bay's shoreline clean and healthy by joining our monthly shoreline cleanup at Brittingham Park. Volunteers will walk designated shoreline areas to pick up litter and debris that collect along the water’s edge. These cleanups improve water quality, protect wildlife, and keep our parks welcoming for everyone. This is a great ongoing opportunity for individuals, families, and groups who want to make a visible impact in a short amount of time.

Join us for scheduled Saturday volunteer days at The Glen Golf Park in Madison. These organized work sessions focus on seasonal park stewardship needs and help keep the golf park healthy, welcoming, and well maintained. Work activities will vary throughout the year based on the season and current park priorities.

• Assist with seasonal land management tasks such as planting, weeding, and seed collection
• Support horticultural care including mulching and landscape bed maintenance
• Help with general park beautification through litter and debris cleanup

Collect toys left around the park and place them in the designated area. Inspect toys regularly and dispose of anything broken or hazardous. Serve as the main volunteer for your park; recruit others if needed. Communicate safety concerns or supply needs with park staff.

Qualifications

Good organization and attention to detail. Ability to identify and handle broken or hazardous items safely. Comfortable leading and coordinating volunteers. Dedicated to keeping the park clean and safe.

Join us for a rewarding day outdoors as we work together to care for our beautiful parks. Under the guidance of our workday leader, you will assist with a variety of seasonal tasks. Each April, under a permit from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Madison Parks staff and trained volunteers participate in Canada Goose egg oiling efforts on City property. Volunteers help locate nests and apply corn oil to eggs—a humane and approved method that prevents the eggs from developing and hatching. This population control technique is a key part of our long-term Canada Goose Management Program and helps reduce the environmental impacts of overpopulation in our parks.

This opportunity is ideal for volunteers who are comfortable working outdoors in early spring conditions and willing to complete a brief training prior to participating.

Responsibilities

·         Participate in a brief training session prior to fieldwork

·         Travel to designated park sites in coordination with Parks staff

·         Locate Canada Goose nests in natural areas

·         Carefully apply corn oil to eggs using approved methods

·         Record data as needed and report nest locations and outcomes

Walks are informal, welcoming, and fun, averaging around 15 participants of all ages.

Join the Madison Parks Earth Day Challenge and help care for your parks on Saturday, April 25, 2026, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Volunteers will work independently or in small groups at designated parks across the city as part of a citywide Earth Day effort. This is a simple, meaningful way to give back to your community and enjoy time outdoors.

1.      The permit sticker is attached to the watercraft and easily visible. Tarps should not be obstructing the view of the sticker, and the sticker should be firmly stuck on the watercraft. Marshall (2101 Allen Blvd): 15 standard racks, 90 spaces total.  Parking Lot available but note that long stalls are for vehicles with trailers only. James Madison (622 E Gorham St): 7 standard racks, 42 spaces total. There is a parking lot by the Gates of Heaven shelter, but it has a 3-hour time limit and is fairly far from the racks, so street parking is advised. Twice a month from April through September, you will conduct an audit of the watercraft storage racks at your assigned location.  The purpose of the audit is to inform the Parks Administrative staff of any potential issues so they can, as needed, address them quickly before they become major problems.  Your reports on what you see at the racks will be of great help and is much appreciated!  You will be provided with an audit sheet that will list the space numbers and the permit numbers/description of the watercraft assigned to those spaces.  Look at each space for the following, and if at all possible, please take pictures of any issues:

 

1.      The permit sticker is attached to the watercraft and easily visible. Tarps should not be obstructing the view of the sticker, and the sticker should be firmly stuck on the watercraft. Document if there is any obstruction to viewing the sticker, if the sticker is not on the boat at all, or if it is torn or not well attached.

 

2.      The permit sticker number matches the number assigned to that space. Document if the number on the permit is different from the number assigned to the space.

 

3.      There are no additional, unpermitted watercraft in the space.  If a space is allowed to have two watercrafts the audit sheet will note both permit numbers and the boat descriptions.  Document any watercraft on the racks not reflected in the sheet.

 

4.      The boat description reasonably matches the description assigned to that space.  Only document glaring differences.  For example, if the description on your audit sheet says it is a red kayak, but it looks orange or yellow, that is ok, but if it is a silver aluminum canoe, then document that.  You do not need to verify if the brand is accurate.

 

5.      The watercraft(s) fully fit into the space without infringing on the spaces around it.  No watercraft should be more than 18ft long.  Width and height wise, all permitted watercrafts should fit within the space without extending into the spaces above, below or next to it. You do not need to measure and get exact dimensions, but if a boat seems overly long/tall/wide or is impeding other spaces or people’s ability to get to their spaces, document this.

6.      No other objects are stored in or near the racks.  Document any other objects or items being stored on, near, or under the racks.

7.      Please document any other issues you see at your location.  Some examples of this might include (but not limited to): condition of the racks, conditions of the ground (tall weeds/grass, holes, bees or wasps), and any watercrafts on the ground. However, if you see any suspicious activity or hazards that warrant immediate attention, please contact the Rangers right away (608 235-0448).

 

8.      Blank entries/empty spaces. If a line on your audit sheet is left blank, then it has not been assigned and that space on the rack should be empty, so document if anything is in that space and take a picture if you can.  If there is a permit number assigned on your sheet but the space on the rack is empty, then just make a quick note that the space was empty, no need for pictures.

If, especially after a storm, you notice permitted watercrafts blown off of the racks or in disarray, simply document and take pictures and send them to watercraft storage staff and we will reach out to the owners as soon as possible.

Warner Park is very large, so be sure you are at Warner Beach (1101 Woodward Dr) and are not looking at the racks that are on the lagoon closer to the Warner Park Recreation Center, as those belong to the Recreation Center.
